Why did Native Americans paint their teepees? ›

Some tribes have a rich culture of painting their tipis to depict their symbiotic relationship with the natural world. Illustrations of animals such as buffalo, bears, deer, elk, otters, and various birds often adorned the lodges of Blackfeet, Arapaho, Sioux, Cheyenne, and Kiowa tipis.

For spiritual purposes, the tipi's entrance faces the East and the back faces the West. This is to symbolize the rising and setting of the sun and the cardinal directions. The tipi's poles stretch high into the sky as a connection with the Creator and are firmly planted on the ground as a connection to the Earth.

The word tipi is used to describe a conical, portable structure with two adjustable smoke flaps. So technically our tepees should be spelled tipi. However, it is pronounced TEE-PEE hence the alternative spelling. As the English Language is full of complexities the word tipi can be spelled tepee or teepee.

For the Plains Indians, the tipi was more than just a home—it was a sacred space. The circle, a sacred symbol of the inter-connectedness of all things, is the basic shape, the foundation of the tipi. The floor symbolized the earth and the walls the sky.

The difference is that wigwams were semi-permanent, dome-shaped structures that indigenous people built in the Northeast, while teepees were temporary, cone-shaped structures favored by the indigenous peoples in the Great Plains and Canadian Prairies of what is now North America.

The use of teepees as a primary dwelling among Native American tribes has largely been phased out, and most contemporary Native American communities no longer live in teepees as a traditional or practical housing option.

The tipi is unique as it allows you to have an open fire inside. The opening at the top will let the smoke out – but it also will let rain in. Most rain can be dealt with by angling the smoke flaps while the fire is going, or closing them if you do not have an open fire lit.

In fact, some people became highly skilled in the cutting and fashioning of long, sturdy teepee poles, and these became a sought-after commodity.

Circles around the horse's eye or nostril strengthened its senses for battle. Painted horse hooves symbolized successful raids or sometimes the number of horses stolen. A cross meant the rider had escaped an ambush. Slashes of color across a horse's face indicated the successful defeat of an enemy village.
